Melwood is undertaking an orchestrated advocacy effort aimed at improving the policymaking environment in support of people with disabilities. Through this Campaign, Melwood seeks to create a self-advocacy platform to promote policies that reinforce the importance of programs that expand employment opportunities, advance independence and dignity for the disability community, and give voice to critical DEI issues, including accessibility.

Three issues of paramount national importance include:

• • • Modernizing and Expanding AbilityOne – AbilityOne is the largest source of employment for people with disabilities in the country, leveraging the power of federal procurement to provide high-quality services to the government and good jobs for employees. Melwood is committed to modernizing and expanding the AbilityOne program to meet the needs of the workforce and the federal customer.

• • • Workforce Development – Even in a strong job market, people with disabilities are much more likely to be unemployed and underemployed. Melwood is committed to advocating for policies that break down barriers to a fully inclusive workforce where every person’s talent is recognized and developed.

• • • Workplace Equity – Melwood is committed to advocating for policies and practices that include disability equity in diversity and inclusion efforts and acknowledge the value of a neurodiverse workforce.

The funds Melwood seeks will support a Phone2Action engagement tool, an advocacy microsite, a storytelling portal, and the hiring of a professional advocate.
