David Egan, Board Director, born with Down syndrome, is an eager advocate and leader for people with intellectual disabilities at the local, national, and international level. He is the author of “More Alike Than Different: My Life with Down Syndrome.” He inspires his audiences to see our shared humanity and possibilities rather than limitations. He worked as a Community Relations Specialist at SourceAmerica for five years and was the first person with an intellectual disability to serve as a JP Kennedy Jr. Public Policy Fellow on Capitol Hill with the Ways and Means Social Security subcommittee. He also worked in competitive settings for over 20 years, first at Booz Allen Hamilton and then with CBRE as a clerk in the Distribution Center after high school and the Davis Career Center. He is a Special Olympics athlete in Northern Virginia and has served as a Sargent Shriver International Global Messenger where he spoke to audiences and various media outlets to help spread the message of inclusion and dignity. He has testified about employment at the Senate HELP Committee, spoke about Human Rights at the United Nations, and briefed the National Institutes of Health (NIH/NICHD) Advisory Council. Over the years, he has received various awards and the latest two were the Media Award by the American Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disability as well as the prestigious Quincy Jones Award by Global Down Syndrome Foundation. He also represents self-advocates with the NIH Down Syndrome Consortium, has served on several Boards in the past years, and continues to be sought as a spokesperson in various settings.
