Heather Sherman is the Vice President of Fund Development for Melwood, responsible for planning, implementing, and managing a comprehensive fundraising program to identify opportunities for interested donors to support the work of Melwood now and in the future.
She brings almost 25 years of experience in all areas of fundraising, including direct response; major and planned giving; corporate, foundation, and government support; and workplace giving. Heather has raised over $100 million for large, national nonprofits like National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, The Cultural Landscape Foundation, and AARP Foundation, as well as smaller, regional nonprofits like the Girl Scouts Counsel of the Nation’s Capital.
Heather has a BA in English/Communications from DeSales University, an MA in Philanthropy & Development from St. Mary’s University of MN, and a JD from Concord Law School. She also earned the designation of Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy from The American College, as well as a Certificate in Philanthropic Psychology Fundraising Copywriting.
Heather is an active member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners and the National Capital Gift Planning Council, where she served as President-Elect, VP of Programs, board member, and Chair of Planned Giving Days 2016 and 2019. She is also a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the DC AFP chapter.
She lives in Bowie, Maryland with her husband Tim, their four children Ray, Jayde, Thrace, and Camdyn, and their two fur babies Pixie and Rooney.
