David Moore, 52, lives in a group home, and has been a resident of Southern Maryland his entire life. Melwood adds value, vibrancy and substance to his life that he wouldn’t otherwise have. That’s why he’s been utilizing the services provided by Melwood for nearly 30 years.
“My life would be very difficult without Melwood,” David said. “They do so much for me, add so much to my life. Anything I do they try to support me, encourage me. I am blessed to have the support I have at Melwood.”
Prior to transitioning to Melwood Community Services’ day program operated out of the Waldorf campus, David worked for Melwood Enterprises as a custodian where he was assigned to the USDA’s BARC Center. His disability caused him to retire in 2016, and he’s been a regular participant in Melwood Community Services’ day program services ever since.
For David, one of the greatest values Melwood adds to his life is the close friendships he has developed with the Direct Support Professionals (DPSs) who work for the organization and support him in his life.
One of those DSPs is Thomas Robinson, who has been part of the Melwood family since 2005. Thomas recently came to work full-time for the organization, saying his heart has always been with Melwood and the people the organization supports.
“This is what I love doing,” Robinson said, gesturing to a group of five participants he supports each day, including David. This particular day, the group was enjoying a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game together. “We provide participants a sense of comfort, stability, and security. It really is like a family.”
