It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Karl Groninger, former Executive Director of Melwood Enterprises, who lost a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, June 25.
Karl joined Melwood in 2014 following an extraordinary 33-year career in the United States Army, where he served in numerous senior leadership positions and earned distinction as a combat veteran during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
At Melwood, Karl brought his sharp business acumen, unwavering commitment to excellence, and deep devotion to customer satisfaction to every aspect of his work. Under his leadership, Melwood Enterprises grew into a trusted partner to the federal government, a source of pride for the many employees whose work made that success possible, and a pathway to independence for hundreds of people with disabilities.
Those who knew Karl best will remember his people-first leadership and deep appreciation for Melwood’s frontline workforce. Few things brought him greater joy than speaking with employees and their families after someone started their first job. He believed that everyone deserves the opportunity to shine and took tremendous pride in the team he built and mentored, including many employees with significant disabilities whose talents and contributions helped advance Melwood’s mission. He shared Melwood’s unwavering belief that people with disabilities should be accepted and valued for their abilities and contributions, not limited by myths, misperceptions, or low expectations.
Karl retired earlier this year after 11 years of dedicated service to Melwood. His leadership, integrity, and steadfast commitment to inclusion have left an indelible mark on the Melwood family, the disability community, and on the countless lives he touched. We are grateful for Karl’s service to our nation, his contributions to our organization, and the legacy of opportunity and belonging he leaves behind.
We extend our deepest condolences to Karl’s wife, Vicky, his family, and to all who knew and loved him.
