When perseverance meets opportunity: Iris Smith named Maryland Works Employee of the Year

October 27, 2026

When Iris Smith’s name was announced at the 17th Annual Maryland Works Employment Awards on Oct. 26, the room erupted in applause.

Surrounded by workforce leaders, elected officials, business representatives, and advocates from across Maryland, Smith made her way to the stage to accept Maryland Works’ highest employee honor. Three members of her family were there to witness the moment firsthand, celebrating a recognition that represented far more than a single day or a single achievement.

“I’m happy and grateful to receive this award,” Smith said.

For those who know her story, the recognition felt especially meaningful.

Since joining Melwood Enterprises less than two years ago, Smith has earned two promotions, advancing from custodian to floor tech and now serving as night team lead at the Maryland State Highway Administration headquarters in Baltimore. Her rise reflects a combination of hard work, professionalism, and a willingness to embrace new challenges.

A Pattern of Excellence

But Monday’s award was about more than one employee’s career growth.

For the second consecutive year, a Melwood Enterprises employee has been named Employee of the Year by Maryland Works. Last year, Montrell Deshawn Cooper received the same honor, reinforcing a pattern that speaks to the quality, commitment, and talent of the Melwood Enterprises workforce.

At a time when employers across industries are searching for dedicated employees and strong leaders, stories like Smith’s serve as an important reminder: talent exists everywhere. When people are given opportunities to demonstrate their abilities, they often exceed expectations.

That’s exactly what Smith has done.

Her journey from custodian to team leader in less than two years is an accomplishment worth celebrating. And judging by the thunderous applause she received Monday afternoon, she wasn’t the only one in the room who thought so.

Iris’s story is one of many examples of the talent, dedication, and leadership found throughout the Melwood Enterprises workforce. Learn more about Melwood Enterprises and the people who make our mission possible.
