Keeping 73 acres pristine: Melwood Enterprises at the Carver Center

June 6, 2025

On a cool, spring morning, the sound of mowers can be heard humming across the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s George Washington Carver Center’s sprawling grounds in Beltsville, Maryland. There, a team of four Melwood Enterprises landscapers is responsible for maintaining the 73-acre site, which boasts a pristine courtyard, intricately manicured trees, and dozens of flower beds.

Melwood Enterprises delivers total facilities management services at the Carver Center, including custodial, operations and maintenance and landscaping work. That means keeping the interior spaces clean, safe, and welcoming—and the expansive outdoor spaces healthy. accessible, and visually stunning.

Landscaping Skills and Results

On this particular morning, William, a five-year veteran of Melwood Enterprises, is focused on trimming the lawn around the facility’s solar array. With a weed eater in hand, he moves with practiced efficiency. His day also includes mowing and edging, and learning to operate a zero-turn mower, adding to his skill set.

“We do it right out here,” he said, glancing over the courtyard. “People really enjoy using this space, and we keep it looking great.” The center’s courtyard is a beautiful gathering space that draws in employees on breaks and visitors from all over. The grounds reflect the excellence and professionalism of Melwood Enterprises’ workforce.

“I like the experience and the opportunities that I’m getting here. And I love working outdoors,” William said.

His shift begins at 5 a.m., when much of the campus is still quiet. By the time the sun is fully up, the Melwood Enterprises team has already put in hours of labor to ensure the property meets and exceeds customer standards.
